South Dakota plates

Postby roadsterman » Thu Sep 27, 2012 10:45 am

I'm sure this has been discussed before...Someone said South Dakota could renew my tags after my Washington tags expire because I can't renew them from PV without a DEQ. I went online to the SD site, and could not see how this is possible. Does SD do registration for non-residents? If not, what other options do I have to register my vehicle in the US (keep my tags current), but keep it in PV?

You can get south dakota tags but you need an address in US to ship them to - then arrange to get them to PV. You will have to send copy of registration, title, and other items to South Dakota. Contact Mary Taggart at Mary.Taggart@claycountysd.org
She will send you the forms you need along with cost and instructions.

Here is all the info.

go to the Clay County website:
http://www.claycountysd.org/ and then hit the Treasurers Office button.

The contact info is on that page:

211 W. MAIN ST. SUITE 201
VERMILLION, SD 57069
PHONE: 605-677-7123
FAX: 605-677-7104
EMAIL: treasurer@claycountysd.org

You have to register with Clay county in South Dakota, that is why it is not mentioned on the SD state webpage.

I got everything together and then called the office and the lady gave me how much I would owe them for the first registration, as it is pro-rated. Everyone has a renewal month based on the first letter of their last name, so you will pay for the first registration that covers up until your renewal month, then have to pay for the next whole year thereafter. After the first time, you can register to pay online.

They were very small town friendly and helpful. They have no problem with us living here in Mexico and having an address in another state.

I wonder if they would register and plate Canadians? We will run into the same problem in a year or so.

I seriously doubt that, but you could always email them and find out for sure.

No you need a US social security number and a US registered vehicle. Our only choice is to be lawless or drive back and forth.
