Mexican Food Fair

Postby freeeye » Mon Oct 22, 2012 10:17 am

If this event matches even remotely its promotion, I'm going to be there each evening.

The 2nd Encuentro De Comida Tradicional, October 25 - 27 at the Presidencia and Los Arcos Amphitheater.

Here's a quote from the Opina. I don't know what much of this is so I may have gotten commas in the wrong places:
Opossum barbecue, tamales and cream cheese with tuna, maguey honey porridge, turkey mole, mole of tantarria with duck, flower tortilla aloe broth, bread soup, enchiladas calimotas, deer in black sauce, coachala dish, a salad of xonocostle, garambullo sauce, rabbit Chichimeca, Indian tail, enchiladas potosinas, aporriadillo avocado sauce, stuffed chile uchepo … are just some of the dishes that will be offered to Vallarta.

There will also be tequila and beer tasting and a performance by the Xuitla Ballet.

Wow, opossum bbq. My brother cooks it in Florida, I've never seen it anywhere else but in the DEEP south. This event sounds really interesting.

This looks good. At 50 pesos entry, if that is real and the event is as it is planned, it's much more than good.

We're heading down there tomorrow (Saturday) evening at 6 pm if anyone wants to join us. If this turns out to be a bomb, we will go someplace else. But I don't think it will....

Mike and I plan to check this out. We'll look for you, Rick and Sara; ideally we could meet somewhere outside the perimeter so we can decide whether to go in or not. NOTE: I have seen two other postings about this event -- listing the cost as 120 pesos. Could still be a good deal, though, if it's not too crowded. Below is a link to an article on PV Pulse; I also saw a flyer in Spanish somewhere else that had the same 120 peso entry fee. Please advise if you change your mind about going, or want to set up a place to meet -- we'll check in later today before we head downtown.

I'll be passing on the opportunity to try insects....

We went to the food fair last evening; it was the last night of the event. Cost was indeed 50 pesos (on handwritten notes pasted over the printed poster). It was a great chance to sample foods from across Mexico; most booths seemed to be staffed by chefs from restaurants from the various regions. Included tequila and beer, freely available. Many were dressed in traditional garb. Thankfully, nearly all the items were not weird at all....variations on tacos, stews, tamales, seafood, agua frescas -- plus salads, vegetable dishes, a few sweets. A bit crowded in the aisles at times, but no long lines. Definitely worth doing in future years -- a feast.
