The Unpresentable Ones, unelected Mexican legislators

OK, this is most likely only of interest to policy wonks like me, but a story in the Washington Post provides an interesting insight into the composition of the Mexican legislature and future policy implications. The composition of the legislatures is 300 directly elected legislators and 200 who are selected by their respective parties based on proportion of votes received. The so-called "unpresentable ones" include well-connected political family members, TV industry representatives, union officials, and individuals with shaky pasts.

Hmmmmmmm. Sounds familiar. Different specifications maybe, but similar outcomes to what goes on up north.

This is particularly shocking and unheard of:

“While the political parties will deny this, there have been lawmakers over the years that are relieved to find that once they are in Congress, it is more difficult for investigators to question them, to bring them to trial,” said Jeffrey Weldon, a political analyst at the Mexico Autonomous Institute of Technology, a private research university in Mexico City.
