When the Rant is Over...

Adios Alex

Alex Cockburn, 71, died yesterday. He was a friend.

He was a journalist who lived in N. California and wrote for, among, many other papers, one that I also wrote for, The Anderson Valley Advertiser (a misnomer if there ever was one). We shared political views in toto.

He had the sharpest of wit and was always up for a laugh although you would never know it from his writing and reporting, which were very often serious and studied. He had no patience for the illogical and banal. We had some good times together and we fought on the same side.

I have always enjoyed reading Alexander Cockburn, even though he could be infuriating at times. I knew you would be kindred spirits, Rick, but didn't know that you had the privilege of his friendship. I'm sorry for your personal loss, and for our collective loss of this fearless voice.
