Smart asses definitely, cheap asses not so much, we're just broke. If they new how much it costs to buy rum by the case and the cost of heating the house when its 40 below they'd no why the tips are small.
On a serious note, I think most of us from the left coast of Canada tip pretty generously.

We always tip except for places like A&W, McDonalds, and the odd little place where the owner is also the waiter... (A local Vietnamese and a Chinese restaurant.)

One time I was passing through Calgary and stopped in McDonalds for a Big Mac ...the burger was just like in the pictures( a very rarity) best Big Mac I Ever had...I went back to the counter and asked the girl to grab the guy putting the burgers together for me really quick...I gave him $5 and told him he was doing an awesome job..!!! You shoulda seen the look of shock and gratitude on his face!!!!
You know ..those poor bastards slaving in the fast food joints probably work harder and deal with more stress than most waiters and waitresses ...and are more deserving of tips than a lot of servers!!
I have tipped at fast food places more than once...at our local A&W a lot of times the counter person will bring your food to you if it is a small wait..I tip then too!

In a small mom and pop operation where the owner is also the waiter, I would for sure tip, as they don't have a waitress, in order to not only save minimum wage for that staff, but because the tip is part of what makes the operation profitable. These small operations are often on the edge of not making it.

Sometimes it is an insult to tip the owner. I never do.

I dont tip unless the service is what I expect. So if I get shitty service I will leave the penny and hope they get my tip to them BUCK UP!! they dont call it the service industry for nothing

Question is though, do ANY places live up to your expectations?!
